Associations
Last fall, BVPA, the German association of picture agencies, asked me a series of questions about the U.S. market for stock photography and where I think it is headed. The following is what I told them along with links to a few relevant stories.
The annual
CEPIC Congress, the world’s largest event where licensors of still still and footage get to together to discuss issues facing their industry, will be held from 25 to 27 May 2016 in Zagreb, Croatia at the Sheraton Zagreb Hotel.
A discussion of how image creation with mobile devices is changing stock photography and the photography business will be feature of the Digital Media Licensing Association (
DMLA) conference in New York on October 27th.
Scott Braut, Head of Content at Adobe, is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the Digital Media Licensing Association (DMLA) (formerly PACA)

CEPIC has announced that its 2016 Congress will be held in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, beginning May 25th thru the 27th, 2016. This annual event brings together stock photo distributors from all over the world. The
2015 event was held in Warsaw, Poland and attended by over 400 people from 32 countries representing all aspects of the picture industry -- stock and press agencies, cultural heritage, video vendors and producers as well as crowdsourcing and microstock companies.
VisualSteam has announced the results of its annual survey of art buyers regarding the use of stock photography and video. Getty Images, iStock Photos, and Shutterstock take the top 3 spots (in that order) as the go-to resources for art buyers.

ASMP has responded to the
April 24, 2015 U.S. Copyright Office Notice of Inquiry, which set out to review “how certain visual works, particularly photographs, graphic artworks, and illustrations are monetized, enforced and registered under the Copyright Act.”
The deadline for responses to the
Copyright Office’s April 24 Notice of Inquiry is rapidly approaching. ASMP needs more information from photographers about the problems they have encountered in protecting their copyright.
Visual Connections has announced the dates for its October conference in New York. This year
Visual Connections New York 2015 will be on October 28th immediately following the
DMLA (formerly PACA) Annual Conference that runs from Sunday October 25 through Tuesday the 27th. And if that isn’t enough photo related events for you
PhotoPlus Expo will be October 22-24, 2015 at the Javits Convention Center.
Are we about to experience another major shift in the photography market similar to the shift from RM to RF and the dramatic changes brought about by Microstock? At the
CEPIC Congress in Warsaw on Friday June 5th at 10:00am I will be moderating a
panel discussion on Crowdsourcing and how it is likely to impact the stock photography business in the near future.
If you’re interested in stock footage you may want to attend the
ACSIL Footage Expo 2015 in Manhattan next week. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 between 10:30am and 5:15pm at the Midtown Loft & Terrace, 267 Fifth Avenue, (29th Street), New York. NY. Many of the major footage distributors will be exhibiting.
In March we reported that an
ACSIL survey of stock footage distributors concluded that globally $550 million in revenue was generated from the licensing of stock footage in 2014. The 53-question survey was sent to over 400 companies that license stock footage and 90 responded. The following is an executive summary of the results.
In preparation for the
BAPLA Focus on Copyright event in London on May 14, 2015, BAPLA is surveying its membership on the standards and pricing members employ for Web, Social Media and App use.
The third
ACSIL Global Survey of Stock Footage Companies (AGS3) reports a rapidly growing business for companies who have set up dedicated units to market and sell footage. The $550 million global business in 2014 represents a 40% increase in the three years since 2011 when the market was estimated at
$394 million.
CEPIC, in conjunction with
East News Photo Agency, has launched the first edition of the
CEPIC Stock Photography Awards competition with a 3,000 Euro prize and a title of CEPIC
Stock Photographer of the Year.
Early-bird registration discounts for the
CEPIC Congress 2015 in Warsaw, Poland will end on February 8, 2015. Always a highlight of the year for stock photo distributors, the Congress itself will take place at the 5-star
Sofitel Warsaw Victoria Hotel beginning on June 3, 2015 and continuing through June 6th.
Visual Connections, best known for its annual expo in New York, has added Boston to its schedule with a marketing event for stock image/footage agencies on Thursday, March 26th at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School. The Boston Visual Media Expo will follow a similar format to previous popular and successful events in Chicago and Toronto.
President Bob Hendriks and Treasurer Deborah Free have quietly announced resignation from their
Young Photographer’s Alliance (YPA) positions as of December 31st 2014.
One of the most interesting panels at the Digital Media Licensing Association (DMLA formerly known as PACA) annual conference in New York this week was on “Opening New Markets Through Image Embedding.” Back in March Getty Images launched its
Image Embed Tool and made 35 million images available for free embedding on social media sites. That number has now jumped to about 50 million.
The Board of Directors of the
American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) has announced the selection of Thomas R. Kennedy as the Society's Executive Director, effective January 1, 2015. Kennedy is an internationally known visual communicator with extensive experience in print and online journalism.
The next
CEPIC International Congress will be held in Warsaw on June 3rd through 6th, 2015. The CEPIC Congress is the premier annual event where stock agencies and image distributors from around the world meet to conduct business and get updated on the latest trends in the stock photography industry.
ACSIL and
Thriving Archives have teamed up again to conduct the
ACSIL Global Survey of Stock Footage Companies 3 (AGS3). Like their two previous collaborations, the AGS3 will explore and assess overall business conditions within the stock footage industry, discover how things are getting done, track evolving trends and provide strategic, action-oriented data to footage industry leaders. All footage companies worldwide are invited to participate.
PACA (the Digital Media Licensing Association) has announced some of the panelist and speakers for this years conference that will be held in New York from Sunday, October 19th through October 21st. For more details check this
