Textbook Prices Climbing, But Not Image Use Fees

For those licensing images to textbooks National Public Radio published an interesting report recently that is worth a listen. It was pointed out that prices for college textbooks are often over $300 and climbing faster than the cost of food, clothing, cars and even health care.

Jim,

I've got a daughter who's a college senior. Your article stimulated something I never thought about before.

Each semester, as my daughter gets her list of books the professor chose for her courses, I help her by going online to order them used - from Amazon. I get tremendous discounts that way and save tons of money.

Traditionally, all through the years textbook pricing has been determined by print runs. While others may have,

I never considered the multiple uses for each printed copy enabled now that the resellers are dominating the textbook market - at least for college level books.

On the other hand, most major publishers are now demanding huge print runs as part of the basic license so maybe it's all a moot point.

In any event, I thought I would share the thought.
