NPPA Best of Photojournalism (BoP) Awards

The Palm Beach Photographic Centre (PBPC), has invited the public to participate in the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) 2014 Best of Journalism Awards Show on August 8th and a full Education + Community Day on August 9th with TED-style panel discussions.

“BoP premiere winners, prominent visual journalists, media leaders and NPPA members from all over the world are expected to attend the two-day event (August 8-9), along with NPPA’s Board of Directors,” said Fatima NeJame, president and CEO of PBPC. “This may be the most prestigious photojournalism event that we have ever hosted here in West Palm Beach, and the 2014 Best of Photojournalism Exhibition ‘Best in Show’, will run in the Museum at the Photo Centre through the month of August.”

“Palm Beach Photographic Centre is state of the art and the prefect place for our Best of Photojournalism Awards + Education/Community event and look forward to growing our relationship with Fatima and all the great people in West Palm who made this happen!” stated Scott Mc Kiernan, NPPA VP and Chair for this event.

Friday, August 8
5 to 7 p.m. – Opening Reception for the 2014 Best of Photojournalism Winners: ‘Best in Show’ Exhibition (At the Palm Beach Photographic Centre Museum)

7:30 to 10 p.m. – BoP (Best of Photojournalism) 2014 Contest Awards Show with Premiere of the Bop’14 Winners Movie: ‘A Thousand Pictures Tell a Thousand Stories’ (showing every last winner) with interludes by the 2014 BoP Premiere winners, who will, share with us their experiences in making their winning work as well as Introduction of ‘The BoP Trophy’ for Best in Photojournalism 2014 Contest Winners. All 2014 BoP Premiere Winners will receive beautiful gifts from Think Tank Photo as well as a the new ‘the BoP’ Trophy. (In the Waterfront Lake Pavilion)

Saturday, August 9
9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. – BoP Education & Sharing Day: Illuminate, Enlighten, Change, Bring it Home & Inspire. Panel discussions featuring 2014 BoP Award winners will be held in the City of West Palm Beach Commission Chambers.

10:00 – 11:00 – Panel 1: ILLUMINATE with Sean Proctor of the Midland Daily News (Photojournalist of the Year – Smaller Markets), Niko Koppel of The New York Times (Newspaper Picture Editor of the Year – Individual) and Joshua Maranhas of KDVR/KWGN (Video Editor of the Year) and Tom Rapp, KCCI-TV, Des Moines, IA (Small Market Station of the Year).

This panel will be moderated by James K. Colton, ZUMA Press and ThePicturesofTheDay.com, Editor-at-Large and creator/editor-in-chief of zPhotoJournal (and formerly Photo Editor of Sports Illustrated, prior to that Director of Photography for Newsweek Magazine).

11:15 – 12:15 – Panel 2: ENLIGHTEN with Chang W. Lee of The New York Times (Best Use of MultiMedia for “The Jockey”)
James Gehrz of the Star-Tribune (the Cliff Edom “New America Award” winner), Nicole Fruge of The San Francisco Chronicle  (Newspaper Picture Editor of the Year – Team) and Aaron Kurtz of WAVY-TV, Portsmouth, VA (Station of the Year – Medium Market). Mr. Colton will also moderate this panel.

12:30 – 1:45 – Panel 3: CHANGE with Andy Buck, Michael Driver, Enrico Meyer and Corky Scholl, Photojournalists extra ordinary from KUSA-TV, Denver (Large Market Station of the Year). Award-winning photojournalist and multimedia producer Bethany Swain will moderate this panel.

3:15 – 4:15 – Panel 4: HOME - "Bringing the Story Home”
Al Diaz, Miami Herald, Staff Photojournalist, winner of NPPA’s 2014 Humanitarian Award.

4:30 – 6:00 p.m. – Panel 5: INSPIRE with John Tiumacki of The Boston Globe (Photojournalist of the Year – Larger Markets), Patrick Smith, Freelance (Sports Photographer of the Year) and Scott Mc Kiernan of ZUMA Press’s MultiMedia portal zReportage.com (Best Use of Photography – Magazines & Digital Publications) and Mr. Colton will moderate this panel.

7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. –NPPA Board’s State of the Photographic Industry Town Hall Meeting held on the second floor of the Palm Beach Photographic Centre located at the downtown City Center municipal complex at 415 Clematis Street in downtown West Palm Beach.

Town Hall participants will include NPPA officers including President Mark Dolan, Secretary Michael King, Treasurer Jim Michalowski, Immediate Past President Michael Borland and Regional Chair Merry Murray. Also scheduled to take part are NPPA Board Members: Bethany Swain, John Harrington, Brad Pfanger, Greg Smith, John R. Fulton Jr., Amy Kinsella Gruber, Katie Schoolov, Nick Gonzales (NPPA Student Representative) and others. NPPA Vice President Scott Mc Kiernan will moderate this town hall meeting.
