Travel Photographer Closes Website

Rick Strange, a very successful UK travel photographer with over 45 years experience is closing his www.worldtravelphotographs.com website after over 4 years of very disappointing sales. Considering the excellent quality of his work, this may be a cautionary tale for any photographer considering trying to market work from a personal website rather than using a stock agency.

I hate to say this, but after leaving the stock management side of the business in 1999, after TIB was sold to getty Images, I had and have a pretty good idea of what sells. I went to his website. From a technical standpoint, his pictures are great. From a content standpoint, we had 20 or 30 of each. Who needs more of them? In today's world, you can find images like his all over the internet. Travel shooting has moved well beyond what he was producing. At the very least it is more personal. For sure, everything changes and rust never sleeps.

I agree, unfortunately this kind of work is simply not modern enough. A lot has changed, if you are still shooting like in the eighties, the porfolio will look very aged. He could probably still get some regular income, if he placed his files on stock sites, just for retirement benefits. But if what you have is not unique, it will always be a had sell. He is also offering the exact same style many people love to offer for free with a creative commons license. There is so much more you can do with travel.
