While this is a rather amusing story, it should not be taken as the norm in China at all. Having personally interviewed clients all over both Shanghai and Beijing over several years, the China stock market is much more sophisticated than this short story would lead one to believe. There is a lot of decent Chinese content out there, there are good stock agencies selling it, and many clients are very well informed of the industry (nearly all quote Getty and Corbis as their main suppliers).

Let's not forget that the average educated Chinese knows a lot more about the US than the average educated American knows about China.

Just my two cents.
