Alamy Opens West Coast Data Center

Alamy has extended its server infrastructure to NYI’s data center in Los Angeles, to serve the company's growing West Coast customer base. Searching for images on the West Coast will now be as fast as on the East Coast. NYI successfully oversaw Alamy’s upgrade for North America, and now the company will manage the West Coast activity.

Could anyone explain why the speed of the search would previously have been slower on the West Coast than on the east? I thought that individuals' internet speeds vary depending on their local service provider, and in some countries this can be rather slow, but how is Alamy's opening a "data center" in Los Angeles able to speeed up the users' image search? Doesn't this depend on the speeds available from our service providers, wherever we happen to be located? Chuck

Hi Charles - speed of your ISP is certainly a factor in how fast the web in general will be for you, but geography is much more important. Even travelling at the speed of light, images delivered to a customer screen in LA from NYC will take significantly longer to load than had the same content been sent from somewhere in LA (up to twelve times faster by our measurements).
