World Portraits, The Netherlands company that emphasizes fair trade, and Dutch photo agency Hollandse Hoogte have announced a competition that will provide the winner with at least 5,000 euro to finance a photography assignment.
World Portraits is a collection of people and lifestyle imagery from all over the world. It now stands at some 6,000 images depicting 3,500 “models”—real people from 34 countries. The subjects share in the revenues generated by licensing rights to their photos.
For this contest, the sponsors are seeking a professional photographer who loves to travel and has a great idea for a shoot. Great, in the eye of these beholders, means an honest and original production that features real people, with no makeup or other styling, in a setting or situation that has the potential to bring in a wide array (at least 100) of future image uses.
The resulting images will be added to the World Portraits collection. The photographer will retain copyright ownership and receive a 40% commission on future sales—along with models, who receive a separate commission, as is World Portraits’ business practice.
To compete, photographers are asked to submit a two-page proposal and a relevant portfolio. The proposal must include a budget that covers travel expenses and production costs, and the trip cannot be scheduled later than September. The competition’s jury consists of photographer and newscaster Sacha de Boer, Margriet magazine chief editor Leontine van den Bos, television producer Floortje Dessing and Hollandse Hoogte director Louis Zaal.
Proposals must be submitted to World Portraits by mail or rznvy before May 1. The winner will be announced on June 1.
