Popular video-sharing site Vimeo is in the process of adding Creative Commons functionality. According to the
Vimeo blog, his will enable users to “retain the copyright for [their] work… [and] allow other people to distribute it, remix it or use it for a new purpose, commercial or noncommercial. All of this while still requiring that they credit you for the original work.”
As popularity of motion content rises, licensing via YouTube and Vimeo may well follow the path established by Flickr. Vimeo says that Creative Commons licenses have been a desired feature among its user base. General manager Dae Mellencamp describes the integration as an important step that makes it easy for creators to encourage uses of their work while maintaining copyright.
Creative Commons offers six primary license agreements, each with its own set of terms governing, among other things, attribution requirements, derivative works, and commercial use. Vimeo plans to integrate a search-by-license-type option that would enable visitors to sort results according to Creative Commons’ structure.
