Students and teachers needing images for research, term papers and projects can now get them from Britannica Image Quest, an online database of images sourced and provided by a London/Chicago-based Universal Images Group.
The database launched with 1 million images, but eventually about 2 million will be available, including more than 40 collections: Encyclopaedia Britannica' own, alongside Dorling Kindersley, De Agostini Editore, Mondadori Electa, Getty Images, Amana Images, Bridgeman Art Library, National Portrait Gallery of London, National Geographic Society, The Science Museum, the Wellcome Trust Library and Oxford Scientific. All images are cleared for educational uses that can range from homework assignments to lesson plans, in-class presentations and school newspapers and bulletins.
“Students today don’t just write reports; they produce rich expositions that combine research and relevant illustrations,” said Michael Ross, a senior vice president at Encyclopaedia Britannica and general manager of Britannica Digital Learning. “But it can be hard to find the right images... and to know if you’re allowed to use them."
