Aaron Lim Boon Teck of Singapore is the winner of the 2010 National Geographic Photography Contest with an image of the eruption of Indonesia’s Gunung Rinjani volcano. The win is notable in that it carries a cash prize of $10,000—the first-ever monetary award offered by the magazine for its annual contest. In addition, the winning shot has been published in worldwide editions of National Geographic, and the photographer receives a trip to participate in the National Geographic Photography Seminar in January 2011. The contest received more than 16,000 professional and enthusiast entries.
