BOUGHN MOVES AGAIN
January 19, 1999
Artville, the Madison, WI based subsidiary of The Image Bank has named Ellen Boughn
to the position of Vice President-Photography. She will be charged with expanding
Artville's existing photography product line of royalty-free imagery.
Prior to this position, Ms. Boughn was with Definitive Stock in Seattle for a few months,
and before that she served as Director of Content at Corbis Images. She also held the position
of Product Manager for Workbook Online, a web-based resource for stock imagery.
In the late 1970's Ms. Boughn founded After-Image, a Los Angeles-based stock photography
agency known for its highly creative content. She sold her company to Tony Stone Images
in 1990 and subsequently held the positions of President at Tony Stone Images-Los Angeles
and Member, Borad of Directors, at Tony Stone Images-London.
Miles Gerstein, President and Publisher of Artville sees exciting challenges ahead for
Boughn and says, "Artville is already known for the quality of its illustrations. Now
our task is to expand the scope of our photography collection. Ellen brings a creative
vision and a wealth of experience to her new position. Her knowledge of the market is
second to none. We are looking forward to seeing her put her stamp on our new photography
collection."
Boughn says, "I believe that the combination of Artville's strategic position in the
marketplace and the visual resources of The Image Bank is an unbeatable one."
Leaving Definitive
It is unclear why Boughn's tenure at Definitive Stock was so short. Michael Carpenter,
President of Definitive Stock said in December, "Ellen Boughn joined Definitive Stock
[in August 1998] to help build
international distribution and expand the collection of rights-protected
images. Her considerable experience has and continues to prove valuable to
Definitive Stock in these and other areas. After getting a taste for
entrepreneurship again, Ellen decided to launch a new consulting business
with Definitive Stock as one of her premier clients. Both Definitive Stock
and Ellen agreed that she could fulfill her goals with Definitive Stock under
these terms and still have the ability to work with other companies and
exercise greater personal freedom."
It is our understanding that Boughn's consulting efforts for Definitive ended with
her hiring to a full time position by Artville.
Royalty free companies need a continuing flow of good images. The suppliers
of such images find it much easier to work with such organizations when they feel
the person they are dealing
with is someone with experience in the stock photography business, someone they can
trust and someone who will have some concern for their interests as well as the interests of
they company employing them. That is why Ellen Boughn is in such demand.
