Unveiled on Monday, the redesign of the iStockphoto Web site reflects more than a year of usability research and design. In addition to a new look, the company has revamped the back-end technology with an eye to launching other enhancements, including a new search interface, before the end of the year.
The fifth iteration of the site design strives to simplify access to content—not just for iStock’s primary audience, image buyers, but also for other key groups. The site now presents information in three segments, with navigation offering users options to shop, participate or access help.
The home page now leads to separate landing pages for different types of media: photography, illustration, video, audio and Flash. In addition to a search interface, each of the landing pages offers media-specific information: the photo page presents themed lightboxes, articles and information on design; the Flash landing segments available content by function, such as menus, photo galleries or moving backgrounds.
The new “participate” site section unites member forums, articles and other community content sections frequented by iStock’s 6 million members. Created specifically for iStock artists, the new Contributor Lounge offers news, statistics, training manuals and software downloads.
iStock has also provided site visitors with easy access to personal account information via a static toolbar. All such new features are detailed in the extensive online guide.
The company is offering members a commemorative discount through Aug. 15 and reports continued growth, with an average of $1.7 million in weekly contributor payouts.
