Getty Images photographers won 4 of 16 prizes at The Press Photographer’s Year 2009, a competition that recognizes press photography taken for the U.K. news media. Independent London photographer Rosie Hallam won the top prize, Photograph of the Year, for an image taken at an elephant orphanage in Nairobi.

Launched in 2006, the PPY competition aims to demonstrate that “the traditional still image burns the keenest, fastest impression on the public conscience and is the most effective way to show the world the world as it really is.” The awards are sponsored by Cannon and presented in association with the British Press Photographers’ Association.

Close to 8,000 images by 323 photographers were entered into this year’s contest. And edit of 146 pictures, selected to represent the variety and standard of the entries overall, will remain on view in the Lyttelton foyer of the National Theatre on London’s South Bank until the end of August.
