This story provides some comparative figures of the 205 brands represented in the
Getty Images Creative collection between August 2016 and June 2018. There were 15,001,453 images in the collection in 2016 and 23,922,471 today, a 37% increase overall in two years.
There is a marked difference in the percent of growth per collection over the two year period. About 20 brands are either new in the last two years, or for some reason we had no information for them in 2016. Fifty-five or 27% have fewer images in their collections now than in 2016. In some cases, images that were in RM collections have been moved to RF which explains the decline. Another 21% of brands have grown their collection by less then 10% in the two years.
It is interesting to look at some of the collections where there has been little of no growth. Many of these are among what used to be the top producers of Business, People and Lifestyle images. In many cases the image producers supplying these companies have discovered that they can no longer justify the time and expense required to produce this type of imagery.
Producing such images often requires arranging for access to certain locations, hiring models, arranging for props and sometimes building sets. At today’s prices for image use, the time and expense to produce such images is no longer justified.
The collection with the largest growth in the last two years is EyeEm images. They went from 253,328 images in 2016 to 4,542,663 today and now represents 18% of Getty total collection. Most of the photographer contributing to EyeEm appear to be part-time hobbyists, who produce images for fun, not with a primary focus of earning revenue.
