Patrick Lor, co-founder of iStockphoto and formerly leader of Fotolia North America, has founded a stock footage company called
Dissolve. Lor’s company makes a significant number of clips available for $5 although some clips are priced at $50, $150 and $500.
They get a lot of their material from small 1,2, or 3 person production studios that tend to operate in small towns where there is not enough work to keep them busy full time. These people shoot stock in their down time when they are not working on assignment productions. Other suppliers are amateurs who support themselves with full time jobs and shoot video in their spare time with small handheld cameras. Lor’s team works with these people to help them understand the kind of B-roll clips that commercial customers need for their productions.
