Getty Images Launches Flickr Collection

The Flickr Collection, which was first announced by Getty Images and Flickr parent Yahoo! in early July 2009, is now available for commercial licensing exclusively through gettyimages.com.

Getty began inviting Flickr photographers to participate in December. The Flickr Collection launched with 4,280 traditionally priced images. The company said that photographs were selected for inclusion based on Getty editors’ expertise in licensing digital content and insight into customers’ needs. Images from the collection are for both royalty-free and rights-managed licensing.

Getty intends to continue managing this collection by invitation only. New images will be added monthly.

    This is crowd sourcing at it's best. I am pleased to see that Getty did not down price this collection. I think Getty will do well with this.

    This is great to see. My suggestion for the Getty editors involved on selecting images for the Getty/Flickr collection is: Keep in mind that what an art director, creative director, art buyer and media /publishing editors love from the Flickr collection is basically the authenticity, proximity and freshness of their images.

    It is very important to preserve that spirit of the Flickr collection available through Getty, and not pay too much attention to those images that look as those already available through other great professional or user generated content collections such as Stone, Photonica or iStock (among many others).

    I mean, it could be great to know that the key differentiator for this collection will be that one could find there "real life, real people (W/WO model release), real enviroments, real emotional landscapes" and not a majority of (produced-like authentic) trendy stills even if they are fantastic as some of those already included.

    Welcome all Flickr photographers newcomers on this business.
